Sensation of Rectal Fullness

Also called: Rectal Fullness

A sensation of rectal fullness is a feeling of persistent pressure or incomplete emptying in the rectum, which is distinct from the normal urge to defecate. This symptom is a cardinal feature of several pelvic floor disorders. It can arise from functional issues, such as the muscle spasm of levator ani syndrome or the incomplete evacuation of dyssynergic defecation. It can also be caused by structural problems like a large rectocele or an internal rectal prolapse that creates a physical blockage. Additionally, inflammation from proctitis or the presence of a rectal mass can stimulate the rectal sensory nerves, creating a false sensation of fullness. A thorough evaluation is necessary to distinguish among these potential causes.
