Anal Itching / Burning

Also called: Pruritus Ani

Anal itching and burning, known as pruritus ani, is a common and distressing symptom characterized by an intense urge to scratch the skin around the anus. The sensation is often worse at night and can be exacerbated by moisture, certain foods, and hygiene practices. While frequently caused by benign issues like fecal soilage or contact dermatitis, it can also be a sign of underlying anorectal conditions such as hemorrhoids, fissures, or infections. The primary goal of management is to break the 'itch-scratch' cycle by identifying and eliminating the source of irritation and protecting the delicate perianal skin.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible that I'm cleaning too much?
Yes. Overly aggressive hygiene is a very common cause of anal itching. Vigorous scrubbing and the use of harsh soaps can remove the natural protective oils from the delicate perianal skin, leading to dryness, irritation, and itching.

Could my laundry detergent be causing the problem?
It's possible. If you have sensitive skin, the dyes and perfumes in laundry detergents and fabric softeners can sometimes cause contact dermatitis. Trying a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free detergent may be helpful.
