Weight Loss

Also called: Cachexia

Unexplained weight loss is a clinically significant decrease in body weight that is not the result of dieting or increased physical activity. It is a major systemic symptom that can be a manifestation of a wide array of diseases. In a colorectal context, it is an 'alarm' symptom that raises concern for underlying malignancy, where it can result from decreased intake, malabsorption, or the systemic metabolic effects of the cancer itself (cachexia). It is also a common feature of chronic inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A thorough medical investigation is always warranted to determine the underlying cause.

Frequently asked questions

Could my weight loss just be from stress?
While severe emotional stress or depression can certainly lead to a decreased appetite and subsequent weight loss, it is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is very important to first rule out any underlying physical medical condition before attributing significant weight loss to psychological factors.

I haven't had a change in my appetite. Why am I still losing weight?
Weight loss can occur even with a normal or increased appetite in certain conditions. This can happen in malabsorption syndromes, where your body is not able to properly absorb the calories and nutrients from the food you eat. It can also occur in hypermetabolic states, such as with an overactive thyroid or with some cancers, where your body is burning calories at a much higher rate.
