Stool Leakage / Incontinence

Also called: Fecal Incontinence

Stool leakage, or fecal incontinence, is the involuntary passage of feces or gas. It represents a failure of the complex mechanisms that maintain continence, including sphincter muscle strength, nerve function, rectal storage capacity, and stool consistency. It can manifest as passive soiling without awareness or as urge incontinence where a person cannot reach a toilet in time. The impact on quality of life can be profound, leading to social isolation and emotional distress. A thorough evaluation is necessary to identify the underlying cause(s) so that an effective, individualized management plan can be created.
