Pruritus After Bowel Movement

Also called: Post-defecation Pruritus

Pruritus after a bowel movement is a common form of anal itching (pruritus ani) that is directly triggered by the act of defecation and subsequent cleansing. It is most often caused by irritation from microscopic fecal residue left on the sensitive perianal skin, or by the mechanical trauma of wiping. Underlying anorectal conditions like hemorrhoids or fissures can also be exacerbated by a bowel movement, leading to itching. Management focuses on optimizing stool consistency with a high-fiber diet for a cleaner evacuation, and on meticulous but gentle post-defecation hygiene, preferably with water instead of dry wiping, to remove all irritants without damaging the skin.
