Anal Discharge
Also called: Anal Exudate
Anal discharge is the passage of any non-fecal substance from the anus, which can manifest as mucus, pus, blood, or a combination thereof. The character of the discharge is a key diagnostic clue. Mucoid discharge often points to an underlying inflammatory state, such as proctitis or inflammatory bowel disease. A purulent discharge is a clear sign of infection, most commonly an anorectal abscess or a chronic fistula-in-ano. Bloody discharge is non-specific and can be associated with any of these conditions, as well as with benign sources like hemorrhoids or malignant ones like cancer. A thorough examination is required to determine the specific etiology.
