Play: Anal Stenosis: Causes and Relief Options

Anal Stenosis is the narrowing and tightening of the anal canal due to the replacement of flexible tissue with stiff scar tissue. The primary cause (90% of all cases) is a direct complication of a previous surgery, most commonly hemorrhoid surgery (hemorrhoidectomy). Other causes include deep anal fissures, Crohn’s disease, or radiation damage. The condition is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Non-surgical treatment involves softening stool through diet changes and fiber supplements (bulking therapy) so that bowel movements act as a natural, gentle stretching tool. Gentle dilation (stretching with special tools) can be performed, but aggressive dilation must be avoided as it can worsen scarring. For moderate to severe cases, the surgical option is an anoplasty (flap surgery), which releases the scar tissue and reconstructs the area with a flap of healthy, flexible skin to widen the canal.
